The A-9 Vigilance Interceptor is a starfighter available to the Imperial Remnant in Eras 4 and 5 and to the Pentastar Alignment in Eras 1–5. It carries an armament of 2 Heavy Laser Cannons.
Designed By Kuat Drive Yards (famous for its Star Destroyer line of capital ships) in an attempt to break into the Sienar Fleet Systems dominated starfighter market, the A-9 was intended to function as a desperately needed counter to the Rebel A-wing. Released six years after the Battle of Endor, the vessel the Empire received fell short of these claims. Designed with no shields or hyperdrive, the A-9 was faster than a TIE/IN, but possessed intentionally weaker armor.
After a KDY factory world rebelled and overthrew its government, the A-9 fell into New Republic hands. This proved to be a boon to the New Republic during Emperor Palpatine's attack on Mon Calamari, when agile craft were needed to outwit the Empire's TIE/D starfighters. Though they never gained the success of the TIE Series, they would continue to be used by the Imperial Remnant, especially as funds to produce more TIE Fighters began to dwindle.
The A-9 Vigilance is one of the unique (aka non TIE) starfighters that the Imperial Remnant gets in the last two eras. To the Pentastar Alignment it is a regular feature, as it is in the fighter complement of the Acclamator and Venator. Just because it is not a TIE in name, however, does not mean that it is not a TIE in use. It functions just like a regular TIE, except it has perhaps even less health. However, unlike the TIE/LN, the A-9 actually packs a bit of a punch with its two Heavy Laser Cannons. This, along with its speed, makes it actually a quite effective dogfighter (just don't pit it against E-wings without backup). In short, the A-9 is a better but weaker TIE/LN.
