The Carrack-class Light Cruiser is a light frigate available to the Imperial Remnant in Eras 1–5. It carries an armament of 10/2 Heavy Turbolasers and 20/4 Ion Cannons.
Developed by Damorian Manufacturing Corporation, the Carrack-class light cruiser was introduced during the Clone Wars, serving as a fast attack escort to the larger Dreadnaught-class Heavy Cruisers. Designed to be a cheap replacement to expensive capital ships, the 350 meter Carrack was heavily shielded and armored, loaded with a weapons payload of a ship twice its size, and had the speed of an X-wing Starfighter. A group of Carracks could take down a ship ten times the size of an individual vessel.
Over time, with the rise of Star Destroyers as the primary warship of the Empire, Carrack cruisers saw a readjustment in their usage. Pairs of such vessels were often stationed in quiet areas of Imperial space, where their lack of starfighter support would not be detrimental. Perhaps one of the most notable uses of a Carrack cruiser came in 4 ABY. The sole cruiser in the Imperial Defense Fleet over Bakura, the Carrack cruiser Dominant was the prime target of the invading Ssi-Ruuvi fleet. In a testament to the toughness of the class, the ship remained nominally functional during the continuing battles, soon becoming the cornerstone of the Bakuran Defense Fleet. Many later Imperial leaders used Carracks in skirmish lines ahead of their primary screening force of Strike-class Cruisers.
The Carrack-class light cruiser is a very underestimated ship. It has very strong shields for a ship its size, can stand up to much more dangerous vessels, and can run from anything it can't kill. As an added bonus, it has a 360° firing arc. In a one-on-one confrontation, a Carrack can outlast a Dreadnaught, partly due to the inclusion of a large number of ion weapons. They make great screening ships, able to strip the shields from corvettes and frigates so that the heavy frigates can finish them off. They also make an excellent capital ship damage sink.
The primary weakness of the Carrack is its lack of antifighter capability. It has no fighters and a weapons complement designed to tackle capital ships, not one man fighters. In short, the Carrack cruiser is a small but deadly addition to the Empire's light frigates, able to take on ships twice its size and live to tell the tale.
